Ma Lindiwe Mngomezulu lives just off Vilakazi Street in Soweto. She shares her home with a variety of large snakes, including pythons and anacondas.

Visitors can interact with these snakes, take photographs and get a wealth of information from Ma Lindiwe, all for a nominal fee. Given the food and veterinary costs of looking after such large reptiles, visitors really aren’t being asked for much at all, bearing in mind the quality of the experience.

Ma Lindiwe’s love for snakes began three years ago, when her daughter, Nolwandle, took an interest. “At first people were thinking ‘this gogo is takathi’ (this old lady is evil), but they have since come to understand what I’m doing,” she says, adding that providing education about snakes is her main aim.

For information about visiting Ma Lindiwe, call her on +27 (0)82 712 4915.
