InsideOut Jazz Lounge
Music is an integral part of South African culture and heritage, so it's only fitting that Soweto is home to the InsideOut Jazz Lounge, a vibrant place that immerses its guests in culture and tradition through the sounds of jazz.
Based in Machaba Drive in Mofolo Central, InsideOut is the heartbeat of Soweto and believes in creating a sustainable lifestyle, one "drumbeat" at a time.
This hip venue is a popular hangout for tourists and locals alike, and has hosted artists such Erykah Badu, Lukas Ligeti and Faith Kekana, among others, adding to its allure.
The lounge itself marries different aspects of art, with a unique decor created by local artists using metal scraps and recycled fabrics and materials. Local artists such as Kenny Nkosi and Steve Kwena Mokwena produce artwork that is exhibited at the venue. InsideOut also offers African cuisine, adding to the full sensory experience.
InsideOut is owned by Thebe Lipere, a master percussionist who can often be seen performing on stage. He is also the man behind the tasty meals served here.
Big on innovation and experimentation, South African Lipere was well known as a leader of a variety of pan-African groups. Given his prolific political activities, he was forced into exile in 1975, and took refuge and later settled in the United Kingdom, where he found fame with Loose Tubes and collaborated with drummer Louis Moholo. This led him on a musical path to becoming a master South African percussionist and touring the globe as a renowned musician.
In 2010, after 35 years in exile, Thebe came home to Soweto, and is a firm favourite with the jazz crowd mainly due to his distinct sound and the powerful energy he exudes on stage. Every so often he is joined on stage by other local talents.
InsideOut also offers drumming workshops for young people and schools within the surrounding area of Soweto.
